What to Bring (and Not Bring) to Inpatient Treatment

When preparing for inpatient addiction treatment, packing may feel overwhelming. You’re about to begin a life-changing journey—one focused entirely on healing your body, mind, and spirit. But what should you bring to inpatient rehab? Just as importantly, what should you leave at home?

At Central Florida Detox, we want your transition into care to be smooth, stress-free, and fully compliant with safety and therapeutic guidelines. This article will walk you through what to pack (and not pack), why certain items are restricted, and how to ensure you’re as prepared and comfortable as possible on your first day.

Why Packing Guidelines Matter in Treatment

Inpatient facilities operate under strict rules for a reason. Safety, recovery-focused routines, and peer accountability are at the heart of effective inpatient treatment. Allowing prohibited items—whether for security, distraction, or triggering reasons—can disrupt the healing process for both you and others.

Packing correctly ensures you start your treatment journey on the right foot, without delays or avoidable stress.

Essentials to Bring with You

Let’s start with the items you should bring. These are allowed—and often encouraged—for your comfort, hygiene, and participation in treatment activities.

Clothing

Pack about 7–10 days’ worth of comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. Laundry facilities are available on-site. Here’s what to bring:

  • T-shirts, long sleeves, and sweatshirts
  • Casual pants, jeans, or sweatpants
  • Undergarments and socks
  • Sleepwear
  • Gym clothes for recreational activities
  • Closed-toe shoes and sandals (flip-flops for showers)
  • Light jacket or sweater

Tip: Avoid clothing with references to drugs, alcohol, violence, or offensive language. These are not allowed.

Personal Hygiene Products

Only unopened, alcohol-free toiletries are permitted. Bring:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Shampoo and conditioner (non-aerosol)
  • Body wash or soap
  • Deodorant (solid only, no sprays)
  • Feminine hygiene products

Note: No mouthwash containing alcohol, nail polish remover, or aerosol sprays.

Medication and Medical Supplies

Bring all current prescription medications in the original pharmacy-labeled bottles. Include:

  • Any necessary over-the-counter medications cleared by staff
  • Inhalers, EpiPens, or glucose monitors (if applicable)
  • Medical documentation from your physician

All medications will be reviewed and administered by the medical team.

Personal Items

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Insurance card and prescription card (if applicable)
  • A small amount of cash ($20–$50 for vending or incidentals)
  • A journal or notebook
  • Books (limit to 2–3, preferably recovery-related or inspirational)

Items to Leave at Home

Some items are prohibited to maintain a safe, distraction-free, and recovery-oriented environment. Here’s a breakdown of what you should not bring.

Drugs, Alcohol, or Drug Paraphernalia

This includes any:

  • Tobacco or vape products (unless the facility has designated use areas and policies)
  • Products containing CBD, THC, or any intoxicating substances
  • Drug-related paraphernalia (rolling papers, lighters, etc.)

Weapons or Sharp Objects

Absolutely no:

  • Pocket knives, razors (disposable razors may be allowed under supervision)
  • Firearms, ammunition, or anything that could be considered a weapon

Outside Food and Beverages

All meals and snacks are provided as part of your treatment. Outside food is not allowed due to allergies, dietary monitoring, and fair treatment among patients.

Perfumes, Nail Polish, and Aerosols

Strong scents can trigger headaches or allergic reactions in others. Items with alcohol content or flammable properties are not allowed.

Excessive Jewelry or Valuables

You should leave sentimental or high-value items at home. Central Florida Detox is not responsible for lost or stolen personal belongings.

What About Tobacco Products?

Policies on tobacco use vary by facility. At Central Florida Detox, we provide designated outdoor smoking areas and may allow personal cigarettes or vaping devices under specific rules. However, these are monitored closely for safety.

Bring only sealed, unopened tobacco products if allowed. E-liquid should also be unopened and labeled. It’s best to confirm this with admissions staff before arrival.

Can I Bring My Phone?

One of the most common questions is whether you can bring a cellphone. Most inpatient programs enforce a phone-free period—often the first 7 to 14 days—to help clients detach from outside stressors and focus fully on recovery.

After this period, limited phone use may be permitted under supervision for short calls to family or loved ones. Devices are typically stored securely and returned temporarily as needed. Social media, messaging apps, and unsupervised access are restricted to maintain confidentiality and reduce triggering influences.

Items That Can Support Your Recovery

You may want to include a few items that help with emotional grounding or mindfulness, such as:

  • A small recovery devotional or spiritual text
  • A gratitude journal
  • Comfortable slippers or a small blanket for your room
  • Family photos (without frames or glass)

These items, while not essential, can provide comfort and focus during the emotionally intense stages of early recovery.

Packing Tips for Inpatient Treatment

To make the process even smoother, follow these additional tips:

Use a Soft-Sided Duffel Bag

Avoid hard-shell suitcases. Soft bags are easier to store and manage within the facility.

Label Your Items

Mark your books, hygiene items, and even clothing tags with your initials to prevent confusion.

Call Ahead with Questions

If you’re unsure whether something is allowed, it’s always better to ask. Admissions staff can guide you before you arrive, ensuring no delays or frustration at check-in.

Pack Light but Thoughtfully

Focus on necessities. You’ll have access to laundry, daily meals, and structured activities—no need to overpack.

Final Thoughts: Preparing to Focus on Healing

Inpatient treatment is a time for healing—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. By packing smart and complying with guidelines, you set the stage for an effective and distraction-free recovery experience.

At Central Florida Detox, our goal is to ensure every individual feels welcomed, safe, and equipped to begin this critical step in their recovery. Arriving prepared reduces anxiety, removes logistical barriers, and helps you start strong from day one.
